Twitter for Android troubleshooting

Get the latest version of Twitter for Android from the Google Play app store!

Having trouble with the Twitter for Android app? Below is a complete list of troubleshooting techniques:

Try clearing the app's data
Check that your time zone settings are set to update automatically
Remove your account from the app and log back in
Check your network connection
Uninstall and reinstall the app

Try clearing the app's data

Clearing the app's data can help the app run faster and solves many common issues.

Please note: Clearing data from the app will not remove your account from the app or any of your account information, but it will reset your notification and sync settings to their default settings.
  1. From your device's home screen, tap the settings icon.
  2. Select Applications.
  3. Select the Twitter app, scroll down and tap Clear Data.
  4. If you've cleared your data but are still experiencing the issue, try turning your phone off and then on.

Check that your time zone settings are set to update automatically

If you're seeing "Unauthorized" or "Invalid username and Password" when you try to sign in, this is likely caused by incorrect time zone settings or an outdated version of the Twitter client application. Please make sure your Twitter client is up to date with the latest version and that the date, time and timezone settings are set to update automatically.

  1. Press the menu button from from your home screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Select Date & Time.
  4. Make sure the option to Set Automatically is enabled.

Remove your account from the app and log back in

If clearing your app's data or turning your phone off and then on again didn't work, you should try removing and then re-adding your account to the app. This is essentially the same thing as logging out and back in again.

To remove your account from the Twitter for Android:

  1. Open Twitter for Android.
  2. From your Me tab, tap the settings icon.
  3. Tap the account you wish to remove.
  4. Select Remove account to log out (Note: this will not deactivate your account, rather this will only remove the account from the app, effectively signing it out of the app).
  5. Confirm the removal of the account by again tapping Remove account.

To add your account back:

  1. After removing the account, you can add it back by tapping Sign in from the logged out screen on the app.
  2. Enter your username and password.
  3. Tap Sign in.

Check your network connection

If you are using WiFi to connect to the Twitter for Android app, try an alternate WiFi connection. If one works and the other does not, it is most likely that the WiFi connection does not accept SSL or is blocking Twitter.

Note: If you have a network connection but WiFi is turned on, your device will default to the WiFi connection.

Uninstall and reinstall the app

To uninstall the Twitter for Android app:

  1. From your home screen, press the menu button and select Applications.
  2. Select Manage Applications.
  3. Select Twitter.
  4. Tap the Uninstall button at the top.
Note: If the Twitter for Android app came preloaded on your device, it may not be possible to remove the app completely. Uninstalling will uninstall the latest update. After uninstalling the latest version, you can update the app again from the app store.

To install the Twitter for Android app:

  1. Open the Google Play app or another app store that features the Twitter for Android app.
  2. Search for Twitter for Android.
  3. Select Download and accept the permissions.
  4. Once the Twitter for Android app finishes downloading, open the app and sign in.
