Managing push notifications on Twitter for Android

Please update to the latest version of Twitter for Android now available from Google Play.

  • The app may take a few minutes to reflect changes you've made to your notification settings.
  • Having too many push notifications enabled on multiple devices will prevent your account from creating a new push destination. Please visit Application settings on the web and revoke access to the Twitter for Android app. Then remove your account from the app and sign back in to update your notification settings.

To change your notification settings:

  1. In the top menu, tap on the overflow icon (on the far right) and select Settings.
  2. Tap the username of the account you'd like to adjust.
  3. Under Notification settings, tap Notifications.
  4. From here you can tap to adjust the types of notifications you'd like to receive.

To set up notifications for new Tweets from selected accounts:

  1. Go to the account's profile on the app.
  2. Tap the star icon located next to the follow button. You will now receive notifications when that account tweets.
  3. To stop receiving notifications, simply tap the star icon again and then tap Yes from the menu that pops up.
Note: If you are following accounts via SMS, you will automatically start to receive their Tweets as push notifications. You will see these accounts in the Tweets option of your notifications settings.

Enabling notifications on Kindle Fire or other tablet?

  • Notifications are not push compatible on tablets even if Twitter for Android is installed.
  • The notification setting relies on the sync setting and sync Interval to determine when the app pulls for new mentions, favorites, retweets, new followers, direct messages, or Tweets.
  • Notifications will only appear when the device is active; no notifications appear when the device's screen turns off or goes to standby, but will appear in the status bar once the device is activated.
