Improving the way you log in to TweetDeck

About switching to Twitter log-in

If you’ve been using TweetDeck since before December 11, 2013, you log in with an email address and password which may be different to the credentials you use to log in to your Twitter account.

Changing it so you log in using your Twitter username and password grants you access to the same account recovery and security features you receive with Twitter (including login verification), and gives you one less password to remember. It won’t change the way you use TweetDeck; the only thing that changes will be the username and password you use to log in.

How to start using Twitter log-in:

Follow these steps to start using a Twitter username and password to log in to TweetDeck.

  1. Click the settings icon (looks like a gear) in the navigation bar and select Start using Twitter log-in.
  2. Review the pop-up, which explains the process. Click Do it now.
  3. Accurately answer the question – if you answer inaccurately then you risk breaking your TweetDeck setup. Click Yes or No. Note: Depending on your answer to that question, you may see a further screen of text – it is very important that you review this text and answer accurately.
  4. If you answer Yes, you'll see the next screen with the Team feature. Click I organize this team or I'm on the team, then follow instructions.
  5. If you answer No, the next screen has two forms, side by side. In Step 1, you will see the email address that you currently use to log in to TweetDeck. Type your TweetDeck password in the box below it, and click Next. You will see a list of accounts currently in your TweetDeck.
  6. In Step 2, enter the Twitter @ username and password you want to log in with from now on. This is important: If you’re the only person who logs in to this TweetDeck you should choose your main personal Twitter account.
  7. In Step 3, you can confirm your decision by clicking Make the switch, or change your mind by clicking Go back.
  8. Clicking Okay, make the change will complete the process. You should see a success message reminding you that next time you log in, you’ll need to use the Twitter username and password you specified.

TweetDeck won’t let me log in with my usual email address, and says I need to log in with a Twitter username. What happened?

If you see this message, it means your TweetDeck account has been changed to use Twitter log-in. One of these situations has occurred:

  1. You made this change but forgot to log in with your Twitter username from now on. You should log in with your Twitter username.
  2. Somebody else made this change:
  • If you recognize the username shown and it is a shared Twitter account that your team uses, it is likely that somebody on your team made the change. You can log in with that shared Twitter account.
  • If you recognize the username shown but it is a personal username of somebody on your team, then that person said they were authorized to make this change but probably didn’t read the warnings and on-screen instructions as they were doing it.
