How to add your location to a Post

Note: Turning on this feature allows X to show the location you are posting from as part of your post.

You can choose to add a location to your posts using X for Android, X for iOS, X.com or other mobile applications. For example: To give additional location context to your post, you can add a general location label such as “SoMa, San Francisco." In select locations, on X for iOS and X for Android, you may also label your post with the name of a specific business, landmark, or other point of interest. These locations are provided by Foursquare and Yelp.

If you are using X for Android or X for iOS, the post may also include your precise location (i.e., the GPS coordinates from which you posted), which can be found through the X API, in addition to the location label you select. See below for more information.

Posting with your location
To add a location to your Posts:
Step 1

Once precise location is enabled on your device, compose a Post as you normally would. If you haven't previously attached a location to your Posts, you may see a prompt asking if you’d like to enable precise location.

Step 2

Tap the location icon  in the Post compose box to open a list of places that you can choose.

Step 3

Select the location you want to add to your Post.  

Step 4

If you’re attaching a photo to your Post that was taken on the in-app camera and tap the location icon, your precise location (latitude and longitude) will be associated with the Post and findable via API. 

Step 5

For earlier versions of X for iOS, your Post will always contain both your selected location name and the precise location of your device (which can be found via API) when you Post. 

Step 6

The next time you Post using the X app on the same device, your general location will automatically be displayed with your Post, using your current location. For X for iOS versions before 6.26, your precise location will automatically be attached to the Post (and findable through API) along with the general location. 

To stop including your location in your Posts:
Step 1

Tap the Post compose icon.

Step 2

Tap the location icon  to open the dropdown list of locations.

Step 3

Your current location will be highlighted. Tap X in the top left to remove your location information from the Post. Your location information will not appear in future Posts until you later choose to add location to a Post. 

To add a location to your Posts:
Step 1

Once precise location is enabled on your device, compose a Post as you normally would. If you haven't previously attached a location to your Posts, you may see a prompt asking if you’d like to enable precise location.

Select the location you want to add to your Post.

For X for Android versions before 5.55, your precise location will automatically be attached to the Post (and findable through API) along with the general location. 

To stop including your location in your Posts:
Step 1

Tap the Post compose icon.

Step 2

Tap the location icon  to open the dropdown list of locations.

Step 3

Your current location will be highlighted. Tap the "X" in the top left to remove your location information from the Post. Your location information will not appear in future Posts until you later choose to add location to a Post. 

To add a location to your Posts:
Step 1

On the left nav menu, select the more  icon. 

Step 2

Go to Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety.

Step 3

Under Data sharing and off-X activity, go to Location information.

Step 4

Go to Add location information to your Posts.

Step 5

If the box is checked, that means your location information attached to your Posts is turned on. To turn off Post location, uncheck the box.

To remove all location information attached to your Posts, click or tap on the red text below the box and confirm that you want to proceed by selecting Delete.

Note: It is important to note that deleting location information on X does not guarantee the information will be removed from all copies of the data on third-party applications or in external search results. Additionally, this setting will not remove locations shared through Direct Messages.

In some areas, you have the option to label your post with a specific business, landmark, or point of interest. These places are sourced from Foursquare and Yelp. If you believe that a specific post is abusive, please report it to X by following the instructions here.
