I can't log in to Twitter for Android

If you see an "Unauthorized" or "Invalid username and password" error:

This is likely caused by incorrect timezone settings or an outdated version of the Twitter client application. If you are experiencing this issue, please make sure your Twitter client is up to date with the latest version, then check the date, time, and timezone settings on your device. To do this:

  1. Press the menu button > Settings > Date & time.
  2. Tap Select time zone and verify that is set to your local timezone.
  3. Go back to Date & time (press the back button).
  4. Check the Automatic option.

General troubleshooting tips:

Try clearing data from the Application Settings menu on your device:

  1. Go to the Settings menu on your device.
  2. Select Applications > Manage Applications > Twitter
  3. From here tap Clear Data.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the app:

  1. Re-download Twitter for Android here: https://twitter.com/#!/download

Check your connection:

  • If you are connecting via WiFi but unable to connect using a particular WiFi connection, it is most likely that your connection is not enabled for SSL. This is required to access Twitter via the Twitter for Android app. Unlike some other apps that have the option for SSL, the Twitter for Android app does not redirect to non-https if connecting from an address that does not have access. Please contact your service provider for assistance.

If you see an “Account already added” error:

  1. Go to the OS Settings > Accounts > Sync Settings on your device.
  2. Remove your Twitter account and reopen the app. You should be able to log in successfully.
  3. If you change your SIM card, you will need to follow these steps again to log in.

To reset your password:

  1. On the app's welcome page, select Sign in and then Forgot password?
  2. Enter the email address or username that you are trying to request a password reset for. If you have a phone number associated with the account, you can choose to receive a reset via SMS.

For more information about resetting your password, please see this article.

Having trouble staying logged in?

If you are running your app on SD, this will prevent the app from storing your login information. We have disabled the ability to move the app to SD for this reason and others outlined in Google's SD guidelines. Additionally, if you change your SIM card, you will have to remove your account from your device’s accounts settings, which can be accessed through the general settings menu. After you remove your account, open the app and enter your login information.

Need help signing out?

  • Because the Twitter for Android app supports multiple accounts, there is no "sign out" button. Instead, you can remove your account(s) through the settings menu. Just go the Settings menu, tap on the account you would like to remove, scroll to the bottom of the account’s settings options, and tap Remove Account.

Having trouble downloading the app?

  • If you are having trouble downloading the Twitter for Android app from an app store, it is an issue with the store and not with Twitter. However, you can find some troubleshooting tips here.
