Twitter Search Shows Updates Even Though My Tweets Are Private

If you've protected your Tweets but are seeing some of your updates in Twitter Search, it may be due to the following:

Protecting Your Tweets Only Protects Your Tweets Going Forward

  • When you protect your Tweets, all Tweets posted after you save your changes will be protected and not shown in Twitter search and third party applications.
  • All Tweets posted before protection, however, will still be shown in search engines and third party applications.
  • To find out how to remove your updates from Google search, check out this article. Twitter does not have the ability to remove content on other websites other than Twitter.com.
  • When you protect your Tweets, only approved followers can read your updates.

What If My Tweets Have Never Been Public?

If your Tweets have never been public, or in other words, you have always had the "protect my Tweets" option selected, your updates should never show up in Twitter search or other public search engines.

If they are showing up in search results, change your password immediately and submit a request with the following information:

  • When this started happening
  • Where you've seen your private updates posted
  • List any/all third party applications you use
