I’m Having Trouble with Notifications in Twitter for Android

Alert: Please update to the latest version (v.3.2.2) now available from Google Play!

  • Please note that it may take a few minutes to sync and for the app to reflect any changes you make to your notification settings. After changing your settings, you will see a message indicating your settings are updating. You will see another message once the settings are saved.
  • If the setting does not save, please make sure that Master Sync is enabled for your device. This is separate from the Twitter app's Sync setting and disabling it will prevent the app from communicating with Twitter's API to create a push destination for your device. You can enable this setting at the top of the Accounts and Sync setting in the general settings menu on most devices, or install the Power Control Android widget and make sure the sync icon is enabled. (See below for screenshots)
  • If you have push notifications enabled on multiple devices for your account, this may be preventing your account from creating a new push destination. To remove old push destinations from your account, visit your Application Settings on the web and revoke access to the Twitter for Android app. Then remove your account from the app and sign back in to update your notification settings.

Twitter for Android offers push notifications for mentions and messages, as well as standard notifications for new Tweets. To change your notification settings:

  1. From the Home Timeline, press the menu button and then tap the Settings icon.
  2. Select an account.
  3. From the account settings menu, you can chose to receive notifications for new Tweets, Mentions, Retweets, Favorites, new Followers (from accounts that you already follow), and Messages.

Not receiving notifications?

  • Check to make sure you have a Google account added to your device and have downloaded the Google Play app store. If you do not have a Google account added to your device, you will not be able to use Google's C2DM push technology to set up and receive push notifications. However, you will still be able to receive notifications. See the section about enabling notifications on Tablets below.
  • The notification for new Tweets relies on the Sync interval. The interval can be set in the account settings menu. Sync must be enabled to receive all notifications.
  • Check to make sure Sync is enabled on your device. This setting is separate from the setting in the Twitter for Android app. The master sync setting can be found either at the top of the Accounts and Sync options in some devices general settings menu, or through the Power Control widget if you have it installed on your device.

The Accounts and Sync settings should look like this on OS 2.3 (depending on your device):

If you do not see the above setting, install the Android Power Control widget and make sure master sync is enabled:

Enabling notifications on Kindle Fire or other tablet?

  • If you have Twitter for Android installed on your Kindle Fire or another tablet, you can still turn notifications on but these devices are not Push compatible.
  • The notification setting relies on the Sync setting and Sync Interval to determine when the app polls for new Mentions, Favorites, Retweets, New Followers, Messages, or Tweets. Notifications will only appear when the device is active; no notifications appear when the device’s screen turns off or goes to standby, but will appear in the status bar once the device is activated.
