Impersonation Policy

What is impersonation?

Impersonation is a violation of the Twitter Rules.  Twitter accounts pretending to be another person or entity in order to confuse or deceive can be permanently suspended under the Twitter Impersonation Policy.

What is NOT impersonation?

An account will not be removed if

  • the user shares your name but has no other commonalities, or

  • the profile clearly states it is not affiliated with or connected to any similarly-named individuals

Accounts with similar usernames or that are similar in appearance (e.g. the same background or avatar image) are not automatically in violation of the impersonation policy.  In order to be impersonation, they must also pretend to be another person in order to mislead or deceive.

Upon receipt of an impersonation report from the individual being impersonated or a legally authorized representative, we will investigate the reported accounts to determine if the accounts are in violation of our rules.  After confirming the reporter’s identification, accounts determined to be in violation of our impersonation policy, or not in compliance with our parody/commentary policy, will either be suspended or asked to make edits.

Twitter users are allowed to create parody, commentary, or fan accounts. Please refer to Twitter's Parody Policy for more information about these types of accounts.

If a Twitter user has created an account to post your private information, harass or bully you, you can find more information on our policies and how to report these issues here.

Who can report an impersonation account?

Twitter accepts and processes impersonation reports from the person being impersonated or someone legally authorized to act on his or her behalf.

If you are reporting an account that is impersonating someone else, you will need to provide proof that you are authorized to act on their behalf. If you are not an authorized representative, please notify the individual being impersonated and encourage them to make a report.  Our policies require that reports come from the individual or an authorized representative.

How do I report an impersonation violation?

To report an account that is impersonating you, please file a report.

Please include a detailed description of the information on the account that shows a clear intent to deceive others by using your real identity. This could include @replies, links to reproduced content, or links to Tweets. This help page explains how to find a Tweet's status link.

Once you have submitted your report, we will review the reported account. If the account is in violation of our policies, upon verifying the reporter’s identification or proof of representation, we will require edits to or suspend the account. This policy is in place to prevent against false and/or unauthorized reports.

Reporting an impersonation account is separate from account verification.  For more information on verified accounts, go here.

Can I request a specific username?

We're currently unable to accommodate individual requests for inactive or suspended usernames. We may release all inactive and/or suspended usernames in the future, but have not yet set a date for doing so. Follow @support to be updated when inactive usernames become available.

Twitter may be able to transfer a username under our trademark policy. If you are writing on behalf of a trademarked brand and would like to submit a request, please file a trademark ticket by clicking here.
