I'm Having Trouble With My Username

This article outlines the most common problems users have with usernames:

1. You're unable to select a desired username.

Some usernames may be unavailable for use. To find out if the username you want is available, see Why Can’t I Register Certain Usernames? for more information. If you have a registered trademark that is in use by an account that is potentially inactive or in violation of our trademark policy, please contact us by visiting our Trademark Policies page.

2. Your username is in use by another Twitter account that you own.

If you're trying to move a username from one of your accounts to another of your accounts, you can do this yourself.

  1. First, log into the account that currently has the desired username.
  2. Then, change the username to something else (any other available username will work). This will immediately free up the username for use by other accounts.
  3. Log into your other account and change the username to the desired username.

Please note: once you’ve changed your username, it returns to general circulation and may be selected by another account. Also, please note that deactivating an account will not immediately free up the username.

3. You've been trying to Tweet from your phone and your Tweets are not showing up properly under your username.

If we haven't properly verified your mobile phone, Twitter may have created an account under a new username with extra digits (like Amy25).

  1. To fix this: log into your Twitter account from the web, and complete mobile sign up at https://twitter.com/account/complete.
  2. You can then deactivate your extra account. Find out more here more information on this in our article How to Complete Mobile Sign Up: Accessing Your Web Account.

4. It's something else. Here are some related issues:

  1. Can't log in to Twitter? Click here to find out how to log in, even if you forgot your username.
  2. Want to deactivate your account? Click here for more information. Be sure to free up your username and email address if you think you'll want to use them on another Twitter account.
  3. Trying to change your username on a mobile device? We're sorry, but the ability to change your username is not currently supported on Twitter's mobile apps. You'll need to log in via web in order to change your name. Click here for instructions on how to do that.
