How To Find People on Twitter

You can find people on Twitter by:

  • Typing a name into the search box on your homepage or the Connect page
  • Typing a Twitter username directly into your browser (e.g. http://twitter.com/oprah)
  • Browsing lists of accounts related to your interests (e.g. Sports, Science, Politics...)
  • Importing contacts from your email address book to see who's already on Twitter
  • Browsing suggestions we've generated for you

To Find People by Name:

  • The easiest way to find people is by typing their name into the search box at the top of your Twitter homepage. Results for your search will show up under the People tab on the search results page, as seen below in a search for Oprah.
  • You can also search for people directly on the Connect page. Type a name or @username into the search box, results will appear under the People tab on the search results page (see below).

To Browse Accounts by Interest:

You can also find new accounts to follow by browsing lists containing the best accounts related to a topic. To do this:

  1. From the Discover page, click Browse categories.
  2. If you see a category you think looks interesting (e.g. Sports), click it. You'll be shown a list of accounts you may want to follow from that page.
  3. You can also browse by interest using the search box at the top of the Browse categories page. Type in a topic (like "comedy" or "basketball") or a descriptive phrase (such as "flamenco dancer" or "theoretical physicist") and you'll see a list of account results for that search term.

To Find Friends Using Your Email Address Book:

We can look up who in your address book is on Twitter when you enter your email information on the Find friends page. It's a good way to find a bunch of your friends quickly. To do this:

  1. On the Discover page, click on Find friends.
  2. Select which email provider you use.
  3. Enter your email address and password (or grant third party access) to securely connect to your email address book and click submit.
  4. From the next page, you can follow users individually, or choose to follow all.

To Browse Our Suggestions:

Twitter can suggest accounts we think you may want to follow based on who you're already following and what interests you specify. To peruse these suggestions, follow these steps:

  1. On the Discover page, click on Who to follow.
  2. You'll be taken to a page that shows suggestions we've generated for you.
  3. Click 'Follow' to follow any user, or click their username to learn more about them.

Having Trouble?

Please keep in mind that some searches for general terms will not show users with the initial search results because there are not enough relevant accounts related to the search. If your Tweets are not in search results, please see this Troubleshooting article.
